Consultation Summary

The findings from the RSSB research report T1327 (2024) identified revisions that can be made to the W10 and W12 freight gauges in GERT8073 issue 4.1. These would enable optimisation of modern freight wagon designs by providing clarity on vehicles gauges and the definition of the boundary between the upper and lower sector freight vehicle gauges. The W10 and W12 freight gauges definitions have therefore been updated in GERT8073 issue five to make them fit for purpose for modern wagon designs. For completeness, Appendix C of GMRT2173 issue four which provides guidance on benchmark suspension characteristics, and is directly relevant to the application of vehicle gauges has been moved to GERT8073 issue five. To accompany these changes, the information on the RSSB website has been updated to include individual standard vehicle gauge data (SVGD) workbooks for all W-gauges, also to reflect the changes to the W-gauges. The J-tables, which present the acceptable combinations of load units and vehicles, have been updated. The benefits to industry include the potential to enable more or taller container combinations to be carried on some wagons on the existing infrastructure with new wagon suspensions included in the J-tables.
